Bangladesh to Donate USD 100,000 to IATI

The Government of Bangladesh has signed a voluntary donation of US Dollar 100,000 to the International Aid Transparency Initiative or IATI - the leading global body for promoting the transparency of development aid around the world. As such, Bangladesh is the first developing country to make such a voluntary donation to IATI.
The Senior Secretary of the Economic Relations Division of the Government of Bangladesh, Mr. Mejbahuddin, who is also the IATI Vice-Chair, commented that “this contribution is a symbol of Bangladesh’s high level commitment to the transparency of development aid both at national and global level. This is also a sign that Bangladesh is not merely an aid recipient. Rather, it is gradually emerging as a donor and committed to being a global champion of development effectiveness.”
Launched in September 2008 at the Accra High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, IATI was set up by a group of leading international development organizations, with the aim of making information about aid spending easier to access, use and understand. With a UNDP-led secretariat, IATI brings together donor and recipient countries, civil society organizations and other experts in aid information who are committed to working together to increase the transparency and openness of aid. For a country such as Bangladesh, having access to better data on aid flowing into the country, allows it to better plan, manage and coordinate development work – and eventually see more impact of the aid on the ground.
At the center of IATI is the IATI Standard, a format and framework for publishing data on development cooperation activities, which is currently being used by 346 governments, civil society organisations and charitable foundations around the world.
Following this IATI Standard, Bangladesh last year launched its own Aid Information Management System (aims.erd.gov.bd) - a web based and publicly accessible software application which serves as a single-entry window for all foreign aid related information in the country.
